Archant

A man who died in a car crash in Halesworth yesterday has been named by police as 88-year-old John Veitch from Southwold.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was driving collided with a shop in Bridge Street at around 3.10pm.

His blue Volvo crashed in to the side of Valerie’s, a women’s clothing store.

Valerie Large, who owns the shop, was allowed back in to the shop at about 9pm last night after structural engineers had said the building was structurally sound.

She said: “The damage was superficial. There were just a couple of cracks. It’s a terrible thing that’s happened.”

Mrs Large hopes to be open today and said: “I’m determined to be open.”

Waveney District Councillor Tony Goldson said: “It’s a tragic loss of life. I send my deepest sympathy. My heart goes out to them. It’s a real tragedy that it happened.”

Police are continuing their enquiries. Call 101 with information.
