A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for attempted murder after his victim was left with a knife blade embedded in his head.

Kyle Ogilvie, of of Station Lane, Harwich, was handed the sentence by a judge at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday after being convicted by a jury in December.

The attack happened during the early hours of May 6 in Mill Lane, Harwich when his 20-year-old vicitm, James Johnson, was walking home.

The two became involved in a fight which ended with Ogilvie, who had been at a house nearby, stabbing Mr Johnson in the head.

The handle broke off from the knife and he was taken to hospital.

He was later transferred to the Royal London Hospital where, thanks to the skills of surgeons, he survived and is now recovering from his ordeal.

A detailed investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate ensued and Ogilvie was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Ogilvie denied trying to kill his victim but was found guilty after a four week trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Simon Parkes, said: “There can be no excuse for the actions of Kyle Ogilvie. He is clearly a dangerous person who showed a complete disregard for the life of his victim. He has now been sentenced and will have many years to reflect upon his actions.

“Just carrying a weapon is idiotic. Taking one to a fight is pure madness. Ogilvie said that he had consumed so much alcohol that he cannot remember the incident. The drink and the knife made a toxic combination.

“The speed with which he was arrested, with the assistance from the local community, means he will now be imprisoned for a long time.”
