Six cars have been set on fire in Harwich overnight.

Police have appealed for information after the arson attacks in the town.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1am on Monday, May 19 when the first two fires were discovered at Brooklyn Road. Minutes later four further vehicles were reported on fire in the same street.

The cars were two black Vauxhall Astras, a silver Renault Clio, a black VW Golf, a white Fiat 100 and a silver Ford Fiesta. A garden fence in Oakland Road was also damaged by fire at the same time.

An arson investigation has been launched and officers are working closely with the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to establish how the fires were started.

Inspector Chris Willis at Harwich said that an extensive search by various units and the police helicopter was immediately carried out in the area and widespread enquiries are continuing.

He added: “We especially want to hear from anyone who saw two or three people who seemed to be together at the times the fires were started. We also want to hear from anyone who might have seen people acting suspiciously before the fires or might have seen them running away.

“We have collected CCTV footage from a number of properties and ask that everyone in the area who has CCTV to check their footage between 12.30am and 1.30am.”

Anyone who can help should contact police at Harwich on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
