The collision happened in Harwich shortly before 9.30pm last night, when a 28-year-old local man, named locally as Charles Reader, was in a collision with a black Renault Clio close to The Royal Public House on Main Road.

It is thought he had been attempting to cross the road.

The man was taken to Colchester General Hospital by paramedics, but died a short time after arrival.

The two male occupants of the Renault Clio were uninjured. The driver, a 22-year-old man from Hornchurch in east London, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was later released on police bail until February 5, pending further enquiries.

A section of Main Road was closed for around five hours while forensic collision investigators worked to establish the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information in connection with the crash is being urged to contact Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk
