A Suffolk family has described the support of their colleagues as “mind blowing” after more than £7,500 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society in a series of fundraising events.

Haven Power named the Alzheimer’s Society as it’s charity of the year for 2015/16 after a nomination by three employees from the same family, Sally Hope, her daughter Gemma Baker and nephew Jamie Greening, who’s father and grandfather Brian Greening is living with Alzheimer’s.

On Tuesday, the firm, which is based in Ransomes Europark in Ipswich, presented a cheque for £7,566 to the charity following a string of dress down days, charity quiz nights and an auction for FA Cup final tickets, while the company also match funded individual fundraising efforts by employees.

Mrs Hope said: “The amount we have managed to raise is mind blowing. I always knew that the people of Haven were supportive, but this amount has exceeded anything we thought would be possible.

“This is a disease that will affect everybody at some point in their life as they will know or be related to someone who has this awful, mind-destroying disease.

“My dad worked for the EADT in the 1960’s as a circulation rep. The EADT was always a favourite paper of dad’s, but obviously now he is not able to read and enjoy them.”

Jonathan Kini, chief operating officer at Haven Power, said: “We’re delighted to have raised over £7,500 for Alzheimer’s Society. The charity was put forward by a few individuals and the entire company has rallied alongside them to lend the greatest support possible. We have managed to double the total money raised compared to previous years which is an incredible achievement. We’re proud to offer this donation to such a worthwhile, remarkable charity.”

Mussara Jabeen, local community fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “It was pleasure meeting the staff at Haven Power, who have worked tirelessly throughout the year raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society. I heard individual stories of connections to dementia and how it has touched their lives. The money raised will help us to provide information and support for people with all forms of dementia and those who care for them. None of this would be possible without fundraising activities such as those undertaken by the generous staff at Haven Power.”
