A SUPERMARKET in Haverhill has been given permission to receive an early-morning goods delivery - despite concerns from neighbours about noise and light intrusion.

The application, approved by St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s development control committee, means that a delivery can take place between 5am and 7am from Monday to Saturday to the front door of the Haycocks Road store.

A previous application to allow an early morning delivery through the service yard closest to the houses above the height of the store was dismissed in February 2007, on the grounds it would cause unreasonable disturbance.

In documents that were considered by the development control committee this morning, a spokesman for Sainsbury’s said the store – which says it needs more time to stock shelves before opening – had been working with environmental health to reach a solution.

According to council documents, four objections were made by residents in Horsham Close and a petition was also submitted.

Mr Davies, of Horsham Close, said noise nuisance would cause “interference” with residents’ “quiet enjoyment of their properties in the early hours of the morning.”

But the committee was told that there had been no complaints during a seven day trial.
