The “young and inexperienced” drivers of illegally modified cars were targeted in a Haverhill police operation.

Officers stopped 17 vehicles in the Aldi supermarket car park in Lordscroft Lane on Tuesday between 7pm and 11pm.

PCSO Lorna Chapman from the Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Local people often raise their concerns to us about anti-social behaviour; especially regarding the manner certain vehicles are being used.

“We held this operation to target those who flout the law, not only as an enforcement measure but also to educate people as well. We would like to thank Aldi who kindly allowed us to use their car park for the evening.”

Of the 17 vehicles identified for testing, various offences were identified ranging from illegal tinted windows, illegal number plates and faulty interior and exterior lighting.

The drivers’ insurance companies were contacted about the modifications so that action could be taken regarding any policy breaches.

The road safety team brought along a simulator where drivers could experience dangerous situations on roads and experience day to day challenges.

They also brought along a moped brake horsepower testing device, which was used to test the mopeds had not been de-restricted by their owners which would allow the rider to go faster than they were legally permitted.

Fears were raised over the impact the strikes would have on A&E departments.

Strike action by thousands of junior doctors has been suspended so talks can continue, the Government and the British Medical Association (BMA) have announced.
