David Kemp, 34, of Fritton Court, was sentenced by West Suffolk Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Kemp had pleaded guilty to six charges of theft from a shop at a prior hearing on June 27, with five offences taking place at shops in Haverhill between May 7 and June 26 and one offence in Ipswich on April 7, all this year.

He also gave an indicated plea of guilty to a charge of theft, relating to an incident in Haverhill on June 14 whereby an X-Box games console was stolen.

Kemp was granted bail at the hearing on June 27 pending a pre-sentence report, but was then re-arrested on Wednesday and charged with a further count of theft from a shop relating to an incident in Haverhill on June 22. He was also charged with theft in relation to a charity box which was stolen from a restaurant in Haverhill on June 28.

He was remanded in custody and then pleaded guilty to the two additional charges when he appeared before the magistrates’ court, where he was sentenced to a total of 33 weeks in prison relation to all nine charges.

Inspector Peter Ferrie, local policing commander for Haverhill, said: “I’m delighted that David Kemp has received a substantial term in prison for these offences.

“He was a menace to shopkeepers and businesses throughout Haverhill and was responsible for a long catalogue of crimes.

“We have a small ring of professional shoplifters in Haverhill and this sends out a strong message to them that if caught they will receive a lengthily custodial sentence.”
