Holbrook Academy - could students face a longer working day?

The principal of Holbrook Academy has welcomed the news that the school has been taken out of special measures.

Holbrook was placed in special measures in March 2012 after an inspection found significant weaknesses in the areas of pupils’ achievement and behaviour, the quality of teaching and the general leadership and management of the school.

In November last year Ofsted inspected the school again and they have now lifted it out of the bottom grade and rated it “requires improvement”.

In the report they said that the new principal, staff, governors and parents have a clear vision for the future and a strong determination to continue the improvement work.

Principal Dr Simon Letman said previously the school leadership had “lost sight of the fact that what matters most is the quality of what happens in classrooms”.

He added that the Ofsted report was “just the end of the beginning” and said Holbrook was aiming to become an “outstanding” school in two years’ time.

Dr Letman, a former head in the independent sector, said that schools outside local authority control like Holbrook “now had the freedom to be a lot more creative and innovative with the curriculum” and were able to make “key decisions affecting children’s learning which had an impact at local level”.

The academy now has ambitious plans to extend the school day, allowing more time for the teaching of core skills like literacy and numeracy and for clubs and societies to enrich the curriculum.

  • Clearly leadership is much more important than just spending more money. I wish the school well and hope other local schools may learn from this school's experience.

A woman was recovering in hospital on Sunday after her car left the A137 at Tattingstone during the early hours of the morning.

Two people, reportedly including a 14-year-old boy were taken to hospital in separate stabbing incidents last night.

A young woman was left unconscious and needing hospital treatment after being subjected to a “despicable” sexual assault, police have said.

My husband is never referred to as a “working father”, writes Ellen Widdup.

There is nothing work than getting stuck in traffic jams caused by roadworks.

The southbound carriageway of the A11 near Barton Mills was closed yesterday after a three-vehicle crash.

The last day of February this year will see people across the country indulging in a pancake or two.
