Suffolk Police were alerted to the disturbance Warren Hill which started at around 7.30pm on November 2, 2010 after a riot broke out.

The mutiny happened when up to 50 prisoners refused to return to their cells after a dispute during evening lock up.

Additional prison officers were drafted in from around the country to assist with the outbreak, which finally ended at 5am the following day.

As a result of the prisoners actions a number of prison officers were injured, and two of the units in the YOI suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Today five former inmates were given sentences at Ipswich Crown Court further detaining them in young offenders institutions.

James Walsh,19, formerly from Redcar was sentenced to two years. Daniel Davis,18, of Osborne Road, London, Korie Hassan, 20 of Thornton Heath, Surrey, Hussein Abukah, 20, of Tottenham, were each sentenced to 16 months detention. All had admitted prison mutiny.

Ricardo Bartholomew-Clarke, 17, of Feltham young offenders institute in Middlesex was sentenced to eight months detention after previously pleading guilty to violent disorder.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hayward from Suffolk Constabulary’s major investigation team said: “Considerable damage had taken place at two of the units, with water damage, graffiti and general criminal damage.

“Coupled with this there was considerable cost incurred with locks having to be changed throughout the two units.”
