Hundreds of children enter University of Essex creative writing competition

The competition was open to youngsters from across the county.
The competition was open to primary school children from across Essex. It hoped to inspire children to get excited about reading and writing.
A prize evening was held with gold and silver awards presented in each of the three age categories.
There were also awards for the most creative character, most original illustration, most imaginative setting and the most captivating plot.
Local author and stand-up comedian James Campbell read out some of his favourite entries during the evening.
Clare Ruffle, arts education officer at the University of Essex, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response we have received from hundreds of children from across Essex. It felt like Christmas had come early, opening wonderful envelopes packed full of imaginative stories and beautiful illustrations.”
