International Women’s Day is a global event which calls for gender equality and celebrates women’s achievements.

The day is celebrated on March 8 every year - there are often protests, marches, talks and conferences to mark the day.

How did it start?

The exact date isn’t clear however it all began in the early 1900s when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding better pay, shorter working hours and voting rights. A year after this, in 1909, there was the first National Woman’s Day in America.

The idea for an International Women’s Day was suggested in 1910 by Clara Zetkin, who was the leader of the ‘women’s office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany.

A conference of more than 100 women from 17 countries agreed with her idea so International Women’s Day was created.

How can you get involved?

• Take to social media and share why you are observing the day - perhaps include the things you would like to see change for women.
