A suspected burglar is on police bail today after being found snoozing on a sofa following a break-in at an events centre in Ipswich.

The 39-year-old man is understood to have been discovered asleep in the bar area of The Malthouse in Princes Street.

The suspect was detained after a member of staff went to unlock the premises only to discover it had been forced open.

A scenes of crime officer was sent to the property to check for fingerprints and any other forensic evidence in relation to a possible break-in.

When they entered the premises they are said to have discovered the man taking a mid-morning nap on a couch.

Police were called and the suspect was taken to the police investigation centre at Suffolk Constabulary’s Martlesham headquarters.

After the man, who is said to be from Bury St Edmunds, was questioned about the break-in he was released on bail.

He must now return to the police investigation centre on Friday next week.

It is not believed anything was taken from the property before police arrested the man after finding him at around 10.50am on July 9.

Richard Jones, a spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary, confirmed an arrest had been made.

Mr Jones said: “A 39-year-old man of the Bury St Edmunds area was arrested on Tuesday, July 9, on suspicion of burglary after it was discovered that entry had been forced to the Malthouse in Princes Street.

“He has been released on police bail and is due to return to the Martlesham police investigation centre on July 26.”

The Malthouse opened in September 2011. It hosts live music events and is also used as a conference centre.

Prior to the business opening it had been shut for more than four years.

Previously the premises was the site of Zest nightclub, which was shut down after the police and borough council made applications before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court following a series of incidents, including the murder of 24-year-old Jimoh Plunkett from London.

Before being re-branded as Zest, the nightspot was known as Kartouche.

A man has died after a crash involving a tractor on the A14 Orwell Bridge this morning, police have confirmed. The bridge has remained closed since the incident but is expected to reopen before 2.30pm.
