Ipswich Maritime Trust wants to hear from you

Visitors to Ipswich Waterfront over the maritime festival weekend can find out more, and share their knowledge of the wet dock’s industrial past, with voluntreer members of Ipswich Maritime Trust.

Over the weekend, director Stuart Grimwade, tells me the trust will displaying photographs from their archive close to their Window Musuem at Albion Quay.

He and hs colleagues will be interested to talk to anyone who want to know more about their work celebrating Ipswich’s unique maritime history.

The trust is currently putting together its next Window Museum display, about Boatbuilding in Ipswich and on the River Orwell.

So they would be particularly interested in talking to people visiting with memories of boatbuilding in Ipswich, or related items, to help them prepare for their next display.

The Ipwwich Maritime Trust is a registered charity, with the aim `to educate the people of Suffolk in all matters maritime.”

It was formed out of the Maritime Ipswich 82 committee which organised a year-long series of events as part of the Maritime England Initiative.

The less formal aim was to fulfil a deeply felt ambition to assist in the rescue of the Wet Dock from its gradual decline from commercial prominence, an objective that is well on the way to being achieved today.

Among the aims is to keep the Waterfront at the forefront of local consciousness until commercial opportunities came to be grasped.

An important role in gathering and researching the history of the port and docks has also developed over recent years.

The role of the docks in war and peacetime, in employment and the economic success of the town, and importing and exporting.

Trust members will be at the quayside, to meet visitors, from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
