As Britain prepares to go to the polls in tomorrow’s elections for the European parliament, candidates are facing an unnerving few days waiting for the results.

Polling stations open at 7am
tomorrow, closing at 10pm.

In Ipswich and Colchester there are elections for the borough
councils at the same time and there are also a few by-elections in other districts.

The results in both Ipswich and Colchester local elections will be declared overnight, but because of the complexity of separating the European ballot papers first, the results are not expected to be declared until the early hours of Friday morning.

In Ipswich the Labour majority on the borough is unlikely to be threatened with 17 of the 48 seats up for election.

In Colchester, which is run by a coalition administration, the result could be more doubtful – both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats will be hoping to build on their positions.

However in both councils much
of the attention is likely to focus
on the impact of UKIP on the election.

A strong performance by the anti-EU party in the Euro-election could lead to UKIP candidates also being voted on to local councils.

Most countries in Europe will
be voting over the weekend, so
the count for the European poll does not take place until Sunday
evening.

It will be held at Chelmsford and cover the whole region.

A total of seven MEPs will be elected by a proportional representation system.

The time of the result will depend on the turnout tomorrow – but most experts expect the results to be confirmed between 10pm and 11pm on Sunday night.

We shall be covering the counts online and will also be publishing the full results as soon as possible after they are confirmed.

See our website from 10pm for live updates from the election counts.
