An Ipswich man has appeared in court to be charged with causing the death of a 69-year-old cyclist following a collision at Copdock.

Sam Burrows, of Clive Avenue, made his first appearance on the accusation before South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Ipswich yesterday.

The 28-year-old was formally charged with causing the death of Colin Crowther by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The accusation relates to a collision on the Capel St Mary-bound carriageway of Old London Road at Copdock on January 16.

It is alleged Burrows drove a blue 2006-registered Citroen C4 without due care and attention. The tragedy occurred near the Cameo Hotel at about 2.30pm.

Mr Crowther, of Brackenhayes Close, Ipswich, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Ipswich Hospital. He died later that evening.

Shortly after his death Mr Crowther’s family paid tribute to a “kind, thoughtful and considerate man”.

A statement read: “Colin Crowther, a retired planning officer, is survived by his wife, a brother, two children, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and as of December a great nephew.

“Although 69-years-old, Colin was a keen walker, climber and cyclist, who could be seen regularly out and about on his new racing bike.

“Colin was a quiet private man, however his kind, thoughtful and considerate presence was welcomed by neighbours, former work colleagues together with his family and friends.

“His sudden absence from the community will be sorely felt, particularly by his two granddaughters who idolised their ‘Grandpop’.”

Burrows’ case was committed to Ipswich Crown Court. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday next week.

Burrows was released on bail until then.
