Armed police respond to ‘public safety incident’ in Ipswich

Armed police responded to reports that an air rifle had been discharged in Ipswich last night.

Officers were called just after 4.50pm yesterday following reports of a concern for public safety.

Police vehicles blocked a section of Burrell Road between the junction with Princes Street and Stoke Street. Willoughby Road was also cordoned off.

Traffic and pedestrians were prevented from entering the area while officers dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said that there had been concerns that an air rifle had been discharged.

“Road closures were put in place and a thorough search of the area was carried out but no air rifle was found,” the spokesman said. 
One nearby resident who was returning home at the time of the drama said they were told to reverse their car and move out of the road by police.

No-one is believed to have been injured.

Police confirmed that no arrests have been made in relation to the incident and enquiries are still ongoing.

All roads have now been re-opened and access to the railway station was unaffected.

Police later confirmed the incident was a false alarm.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should call Suffolk police on 101, quoting incident number 307 of Saturday, September 15.
