POLICE are warning Christmas revellers in the town centre to be extra vigilant after a woman was allegedly raped in an Ipswich alleyway on Friday night.

Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman told detectives she was sexually assaulted around 11.30pm on Friday.

The woman said she was waiting for friends outside a pub in Upper Brook Street and became engaged in conversation with a man.

He is described as: black, in his late 20s to 30s, of muscular build, around 5ft 9ins tall, with short black Afro hair and a moustache, who was wearing a coat and dark blue jeans.

Police said they then walked together in the direction of Sainsbury’s and went into the alleyway, where the man raped the 24-year-old.

He then left towards the Cox Lane car park where he got into a small car which then drove away.

Suffolk Police are advising people to stay safe and have an enjoyable festive period.

Superintendent Martin Ransome said: “We work closely with our partners, licensed premises and Street Pastors to ensure people have a safe, enjoyable time.

“By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.”

Police need to trace the man and also need to hear from anyone who was in the area around this time on Friday night as they may have information that can help the enquiry.
