THE future of the sorting office in Ipswich is today under threat as the Royal Mail has started a review of its operations.
The office, in Commercial Road, employs 230 people sorting letters and parcels – and those jobs could be under threat if it closes.
Work would be expected to transfer to large sorting offices at Chelmsford and Norwich.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: “It is too early to say what the impact on these people will be as this depends on the outcome of the consultation with our unions and our people.
“Royal Mail’s aim is to minimise any job reductions. Our intention is to make changes without compulsory redundancies.
“By asking people to demonstrate reasonable flexibility, we expect to be able to find roles for everyone who wants to continue to work for Royal Mail.”
The review is expected to be completed by March next year, and the final decision is due to be made in May.
Earlier this week it was announced that Cambridge sorting office would close in 2014 and its work would be transfered to Chelmsford and Peterborough.
