The humble chip has remained a firm teatime favourite in homes across the country for decades.

And today, staff at one Ipswich chip shop are celebrating, after they were awarded the prestigious title of producing the ‘Best Chippy Chips’ in Suffolk.

The Nacton Road Fish bar received the most votes in the county in the Potato Council’s Choice Chip awards. The accolade was announced today when National Chip Week got under way.

Rav Phagura, owner of the chippy, said: “We are really chuffed.

“We won it once before which was a great experience so it has been great to win it again.

“It is about the quality and the quantity and we always aim for and buy the best produce for chips and fish.

“I believe we have good food but we have a good team of employees as well – we always get good feedback so that makes a difference.”

Mr Phagura, who has been part of the shop for the last 12 years, said the Nacton Road Fish bar has customers who come from as far away as Woodbridge and Colchester to sample the chips on offer.

He believes that the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff have been key to the win.

He added: “I would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for taking the time to vote for our chip shop and I would also like to say a big thank you to the staff for their hard work and commitment.”

The Choice Chip Awards is run by the Potato Council in recognition of Chip Week, which will end on Sunday.

This year more than 840 shops entered the competition to be named champion across 10 regions in the UK with nearly 63,000 chip lovers having their say.

Caroline Evans, from the Potato Council, said: “Britain is truly a nation of chip lovers and Chip Week is a fantastic celebration of our great food tradition.

“It’s no surprise so many voted in the Choice Chip Awards this year – the British public feel very strongly about their local chippy and are prepared to take the trouble to vote to put their favourite on the map.”
