The British Horseracing Authority inquiry report revealed some of the text messages sent by Ipswich Town striker Michael Chopra to jockey Andrew Heffernan.

APPRENTICE jockey Andrew Heffernan gave inside information for reward to betting exchange account holders.

He was also said to have received or offered to receive bribes from Chopra, Wilson, Garner, Shelley and Joshee.

Heffernan was found to have stopped three horses he had ridden – Wanchai Whisper, Gallantry, and Silver Guest.

During the hearing Heffernan changed his stance and admitted he had passed inside information for reward to his girlfriend Kelly Inglis about his rides on Silver Guest and Gallantry.

The information was transmitted to, and used by, Chopra to bet against these horses winning.

A text exchange was between Heffernan and Chopra was used as an illustration of their dealings

Heffernan used a mobile phone with a number ending 1174, which was not registered with the BHA.

He had also denied using his girlfriend Kelly Inglis’ mobile phone.

However, the BHA report states: “Yet the damning text messages exchanged between that phone and Chopra’s phone were plainly written by Heffernan or in some cases typed out on his behalf by Inglis. The wording of these exchanges leaves no room to doubt that.”

Heffernan was the jockey on It’s A Man’s World which raced on March 8, 2011.

On 7 March 2011 at 10.33pm Chopra sent a text to Inglis’ mobile phone saying “Waiting for him to get back fancy doing its a mans world will get the money in ur account first thing”

At 11.06pm Heffernan replied: “if it’s all in my brothers account by 9.30 in the morning then yes and how much will be getting put in the account??”

Reply from Chopra - “2k pal in there by 930”

Reply from Heffernan – “What that’s for the previous or tomorrows?”

Reply from Chopra “And will owe u another 2k by the week end pal when I get the other from winnings”

Reply from Heffernan – “Ok well I will ring tomorrow morning then jobs on details hsbc ****** ********* sort code 40-47-06 account number ******** ? ”

Reply from Chopra – “mate don’t go telling anyone about this pal as the price will be s*** and we went win our money wat we hav give u”

Reply from Heffernan – “I won’t say anything mate as long the money is in and it’s 2k we are grand lad?

Reply from Chopra at 11.43pm – “will call u b4 9 trying to get some money from big hitters in Scotland”

Text from Heffernan at 09.13am on 8 March 2011- “is the money in?”

Reply from Chopra – “not yet pal banks just opened ill deffo sort it for you is ****** going racing with u”

Reply from Heffernan at 09.53am – “no Kelly is tho ****** staying at home lad what time bank open up?”

There were further texts in the sequence which show Chopra was unable to organise payment of the full £2,000. In the event just £800 was paid into the account.

There’s a problem when it comes to men and mental health. It’s not that men’s mental health is any worse than women’s mental health. It’s just that men are not so good in talking about it and, crucially, seeking help. That could be one of the reasons behind the shocking statistic that three out of every four suicides are men.
