Ipswich Town fans have been calling for a statue of Kevin Beattie to be built as a memorial to the club legend who died yesterday.

Beattie, who was regularly described as Town’s greatest ever player, died yesterday morning, aged 64, of a suspected heart attack.

The news has been met with an outpouring of tributes from fans, former colleagues and renowned players from across the football world.

A Facebook page called “Give Kevin Beattie a Statue at Portman Road” had been liked by nearly 200 people by this morning.

Fans supporting the calls, described Beattie as a “class act” a “top notch player” and “phenomenal”.

Ipswich Town FC announced there will be minute’s applause before Tuesday’s game against Brentford at Portman Road to remember Beattie following his sad passing.

He picked up accolades including 1973-74 PFA Young Player of the Year, won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981.

Sir Bobby Robson once described him as the best England player he had ever seen.

BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy broke the news of Beattie’s death on Twitter.
