Travellers at Gippeswyk Park in Ipswich

Borough council staff kept overnight watch at the entrance to parks and cemeteries in Ipswich to ensure a group of evicted travellers did not return to set up camp.

Officers were this morning parked at the main gates of Gippeswyck and Holywells Park, where small groups of travellers were camped during the week.

Ipswich Borough Council began legal proceedings to evict a group from Holywells Park on Friday and to enforce an eviction notice on travellers camped illegally at Gippeswyk Park.

It is thought that a small number of travellers had since moved onto land off London Road in Washbrook, but that just three caravans remained in the Ipswich area this morning
