There is no suggestion Mr Haynes, 26, was either involved with, or aware of, what tenants of his house in Purdis Farm, Ipswich, were doing at the property where he lived while playing for the Blues.

Police are still trying to trace those responsible after more than 260 plants and seedlings were discovered after an early morning fire at the house in Penny Lane.

Originally the blaze was thought to have been suspicious. However, it was subsequently found to have been started after a pan had been left on the cooker which was alight. At the time of the incident the property was unoccupied.

Officers discovered what was going on at around 2.45am last Friday following reports of suspicious activity in the area.

When police arrived at the scene they spotted the fire inside the house.

After gaining entry to the premises they discovered the kitchen blaze, which firefighters then put out.

When officers looked around the property they found cannabis growing in the bedrooms.

Drugs were found in all four rooms, according to a Suffolk Constabulary spokeswoman.

Sixty-seven mature plants were found in one room and 97 young plants were discovered in another.

Cannabis leaves were on the floor drying out in a third room while 100 seedlings were also discovered.

Anne-Marie Breach, of Suffolk Constabulary, said: “Enquiries are ongoing to find those linked to the house.”

Mr Haynes played 128 games for Ipswich scoring 19 goals between August 2005 and July 2009.

While playing for Town he became a fans’ favourite after scoring winning goals in derby matches against Norwich City.

During his time with the Blues Mr Haynes went out on loan to Millwall for a month in 2006.

He left Ipswich permanently when he was signed by Bristol City three years later in a deal worth just over £500,000.

Since then he has been on the books of Barnsley, Charlton and Notts County.

In January the Nottingham club loaned the striker out to Hibernian, who are currently managed by ex-Ipswich and England captain Terry Butcher.

When contacted through the club about the investigation in relation to the house in Penny Lane Mr Haynes declined to comment.

Anyone with information which could help the police inquiry is asked to telephone 101 quoting CAD 21.

  • "Mr Haynes played 182 games for Ipswich scoring 19 goals between August 2005 and July 2009". 17 goals in 115 appearances according to Wikipedia which sounds more likely. According you your figures he would have played over 45 games a season for 4 years! Unlikely as he was never 100% regularly picked.
