Mementos of a former Ipswich Town player have sold for £1,000 at auction, exceeding the guide price.

George Perrett played in the Blues’ first season as a professional club in the 1930s and then their inaugural term as members of the Football League.

Two of his medals were among a collection of souvenirs from a distinguished playing career that went under the hammer at Lockdales, the Martlesham auctioneers, yesterday with a guide price of £500 to £600.

Amongst the items for sale was the gold medal bearing his name presented for being in the team that won the 1936-37 Southern League. Another item is a large clock with a silver plaque given to him by the football club’s board for the championship triumph.

When the wing-half’s playing career ended in 1950, he became landlord of the EUR public house in Croft Street, Ipswich. He died two years later at the age of 37 following an operation.

Perrett made 206 first team appearances for the Blues.
