Ipswich: Heroin dealer gets 16 weeks after telling police he thought drugs were crack cocaine

A teenager has been sentenced to 16 weeks in a youth detention centre after admitting drug dealing.

Steven Gunnell was caught when police found five wraps of heroin in his sock, after they went to a flat in Dillwyn Street, Ipswich, to execute a search warrant.

The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply on December 30.

Ipswich magistrates heard there were a number of people inside the flat when officers arrived including Gunnell.

All the occupants were searched, and the drugs were found on Gunnell.

At the time he told police it was crack cocaine, although when it was tested it transpired it was heroin.

Gunnell claimed the wraps were for his own use.

Prosecutor Colette Harper said Gunnell, of Foulden Road, north London, told officers he had arrived in Ipswich on December 28. He and a friend named Joe had been dropped off.

They wanted to buy crack cocaine so went to an address. Gunnell admitted buying six wraps, three for each of them.

When they arrived back at the flat in Dillwyn Street Gunnell said he left the drugs on the table for people to smoke.

Gunnell admitted smoking one wrap which he claimed was crack cocaine, and said he must have been misled about the others being heroin.
