The musical London Road is to be turned into a film.

Work is about to get underway on the film version of the musical London Road.

The stage show is based on the murders of five Ipswich prostitutes in 2006 and opened at the National Theatre in 2011.

After a string of five-star reviews it was revived a year later, again at the National.

The film version could be completed this year and is directed by Rufus Norris.

Mr Norris is soon to become the National Theatre’s artistic director and was in charge of the original musical, which sees the tragic events set to Adam Cork’s music.

Speaking at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday Mr Norris said: “We’re looking for actors who can sing without a doubt. The music of London Road is not like you would imagine in a musical.

“It involves a huge amount of craft, but not a huge pair of lungs. The music of London Road is not like you would imagine in a musical.

It’s the musical discipline rather than years of belting it out on the West End stage that we need.”

However the filming won’t take place in Ipswich.

Instead the film will be shot “within the M25 for all sorts of practical reasons”.

“The actual residents involved in the film are all very much behind it - otherwise we wouldn’t be able to do it,” Mr Norris added.

“We are quoting them word for word so we need permission for every phrase of that.”

  • I hope the families of the victims have been consulted. Otherwise, I'm with Ipswich Entrepreneur over this matter.
