Ipswich: Lorry and digger hit railway bridge at Warren Heath

ENGINEERS are assessing the damage to a railway bridge after it was hit by a lorry carrying a digger.

Police and recovery vehicles attend the scene of a digger that has clipped the bridge at Warren Heath.

The accident happened in Warren Heath at about 8.50am on Felixstowe Road at the junction with Ransomes Way and the road is blocked as a result.

The lorry hit a supporting pillar, knocking the digger from its trailer and onto the pavement.

The lorry is still in the road causing an obstruction to traffic and police have closed the area off to clear away the vehicles and allow Network Rail engineers to examine the bridge for structural damage.

There were no injuries and a diesel spillage is also being cleared.

Rail services between Ipswich and Felixstowe have been disrupted but all lines are open. Delays or rail replacements may still be in place at short notice.
