Ipswich: Man cut free from Audi by firefighters after crash involving white van in West End Road

A man is in hospital after being cut free from the wreckage of a two-vehicle collision near Portman Road in Ipswich.

Firefighters rescued the man, thought to be in his 30s, after he became trapped in a blue Audi following a collision involving a white Ford Transit van on West End Road, at the junction with Sir Alf Ramsey Way, at around 8.10am today.

He was taken to Ipswich Hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

The van driver was also taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.

The area was cordoned off by police. Morning rush-hour traffic was diverted through Sir Alf Ramsey Way, while West End Road was closed to traffic from Commercial Road.

Ian Bowell, group commander of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a male driver, thought to be in his 30s, who was trapped in the Audi.

He said: “We took the roof off to stabilise the car and had to move the van which was right up against it.

“There were no injuries thought to be life threatening.”

He said three fire engines were called to the scene.

A 35-year-old man has been charged following an armed robbery at a business premises in Stowmarket.
