A man from Ipswich has been given an Anti-Social Behaviour Order following a conviction for begging and theft offences.

Bevan Ash, aged 44, of St Helens Street, appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court in December last year in relation to an incident of begging which took place in Dial Lane on December 7 and a theft which took place in The Walk on August 27 last year.

Ash pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to pay a victim surcharge, fined and was given one day’s detention.

The court adjourned proceedings to consider making an Asbo and a successful hearing was held on Friday, March 7.

Under the order, Ash is prohibited from begging and of being in possession of an unsealed container of alcohol within Ipswich town centre. The order lasts for two years and if an offence is committed as part of this order then it can result in a fine or up to five years in prison.

Officers are working to deal with beggars in the town and are calling for all incidents to be reported to police at Ipswich by dialling 101.

Last week the chief executive of Ipswich Central publicly rebuked magistrates for not being tough enough on convicted beggars.
