Ipswich/Norwich: Inquest to begin after Trevor Lilley dies during attempted murder life sentence
10:13 21 January 2014
An inquest is due to be held today after an Ipswich man jailed for life for attempted murder died while serving his sentence.
Trevor Lilley, formerly of Bader Close, died in Norfolk and Norwich University Hosital. He was a prisoner at HMP Norwich at the time.
The 61-year-old was jailed at Ipswich Crown Court in December 2008 following an attack with a 14-inch machete on a long-term acquaintance in a bar brawl at The Grinning Rat in St Helen’s Street, six months earlier.
His victim, David Nicholls ,was left with serious head wounds and almost had one of his thumbs cut off during the assault.
Lilley told the court he could not remember the assault after drinking 20 pints of lager that day.
He admitted wounding with intent, but denied attempted murder.
At his sentencing, following conviction after trial, Lilley was told he would become eligible for parole after four-and-a-half years minus the 170 days he had spent in custody.
Judge John Devaux said: “In my opinion, there is a significant risk to the public of death or serious personal injury by you committing further offences.
“It appears you are more likely to behave in this way by drinking and you have done nothing to curb your excessive drinking.”
The judge praised the “courageous actions” of a bystander who stepped in to grab the weapon from Lilley, preventing further harm being caused.
Lilley spent around £60 of his unemployment benefit on a drinking binge on June 27 before making his way to The Grinning Rat where he saw Mr Nicholls.
The pair, who had known each other for around 40 years, had a fist fight before Lilley disappeared.
Lilley took a taxi home and picked up a 14-inch machete from his bedroom before returning to the pub, although he claimed he only had a “very vague” memory of the trip.
He struck Mr Nicholls on the forehead and then on his hand, almost cutting off his thumb, the court heard.
Lilley died on October 30, 2012.
His inquest is due to take place at Thorpe Road in Norwich this morning.
