A SUFFOLK university student who was involved in drug dealing has been allowed to continue with his studies after a judge agreed not to send him straight to prison.

Alae Dyour was arrested by police after 15 £10 bags of cannabis and two sets of scales were found during a raid at his flat, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Dyour, 21, of Foxhall Road, Ipswich, denied possessing cannabis with intent to supply but was found guilty after a trial.

Sentencing him to a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 12 months, Judge David Goodin told Dyour he had come very close to losing his liberty immediately.

In addition to passing a suspended prison sentence he ordered Dyour to abide by an eight week curfew and to do 150 hours, unpaid work in the community.

He also ordered him to pay £500 costs.

Judge Goodin also confiscated £910 found on Dyour when he was arrested under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Robert Sadd, prosecuting said that Dyour was in bed at the time of the police raid and when officers examined a mobile phone by his bed they found messages which showed he was drug dealing.

During his trial Dyour denied dealing in drugs and claimed the £910 which was found in a carrier bag had been given to him by a wealthy cousin.

David Wilson for Dyour said his client had fallen into a drug habit while he was at university but had stopped using drugs immediately after his arrest.

He said Dyour was now in his third year of a business management degree at University Campus Suffolk and, after initially being suspended from his course after his arrest, he had now been allowed to continue with his studies. Mr Wilson said Dyour was predicted to earn a second class degree.

  • So !, we are not even jailing the dealers now ? How can our MP's stand at the dispatch box and spout "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" ? They are guilty and need to be charged with mis-leading The House of Commons !!

  • He has been found guilty, he should be thrown off the course and banned from campus immediately unless the UCS condone drug abuse these days?

  • So despite the mountain of evidence against him he STILL had the brass neck to deny the charge? How was this individual NOT jailed? Weak sentencing.
