Ipswich: Talks held over future of postal sorting office

SENIOR figures from Ipswich Borough Council have had “positive” talks with Royal Mail over the future of the town’s sorting office.

Last month Royal Mail started a six-month review of the future of the Commercial Road office, which employs 230 sorting staff and is a base for hundreds of delivery staff working in the Ipswich area.

The borough owns the building and the site, and yesterday council leader David Ellesmere and chief executive Russell Williams met senior officials from Royal Mail.

Mr Ellesmere said it was still “early days”, but the borough had made its point about the importance of the sorting office.

He said: “There were no firm conclusions from the meeting at this stage, but we feel it was very positive and it is important to talk about the situation.”

Mr Ellesmere said he hoped to have further meetings with Royal Mail in the next few months.

  • Another hold the Borough Council have on this town and they are rinsing it for every penny they can. This will end up costing them and the tax payers a financial fortune, not to mention the employee's their jobs! They are the most awful bunch of money grabbers ever! And I conclude that they are the very reason this town is half empty with the exception of every tesco that they approve every other week.

  • I would close the place down. How can they have the audacity to charge 60p to send a letter. Its no wonder everyone sends everything by email. They deserves to be closed down for charging rip off prices
