If your name is Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble or Grubb then you’ll almost certainly already be planning your visit to the Ipswich Transport Museum on Bank Holiday Monday.

But for those who don’t have a direct connection with the fire service of 50 years ago, this is your chance to take a trip on one of the museum’s historic fire engines.

Organisers will be giving visitors rides on one of three of their fire engines between 11am and 4pm.

One of the fire engines is a 60 years old pump appliance, with a Rolls Royce engine, affectionately named Dennis, after the firm who made the machine. It was owned by Suffolk Fire Service for over 50 years before it was donated to the Transport Museum.

Visitors will also be able to travel in a local 1950s Commer fire engine, and a former RAF “Green Goddess” Bedford appliance.

Museum Trustee Trevor Ling said: “Our special event gives families the chance to enjoy the unique thrill of a ride in a fire engine as well as the opportunity to explore some of our many exhibits.

“We expect to have a number of visiting fire engines too and one of our old buses will be giving rides. We hope that everyone has a great day out!”
