Ipswich: Your chance to join the crew of an historic fire engine

If your name is Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble or Grubb then you’ll almost certainly already be planning your visit to the Ipswich Transport Museum on Bank Holiday Monday.

But for those who don’t have a direct connection with the fire service of 50 years ago, this is your chance to take a trip on one of the museum’s historic fire engines.

Organisers will be giving visitors rides on one of three of their fire engines between 11am and 4pm.

One of the fire engines is a 60 years old pump appliance, with a Rolls Royce engine, affectionately named Dennis, after the firm who made the machine. It was owned by Suffolk Fire Service for over 50 years before it was donated to the Transport Museum.

Visitors will also be able to travel in a local 1950s Commer fire engine, and a former RAF “Green Goddess” Bedford appliance.

Museum Trustee Trevor Ling said: “Our special event gives families the chance to enjoy the unique thrill of a ride in a fire engine as well as the opportunity to explore some of our many exhibits.

“We expect to have a number of visiting fire engines too and one of our old buses will be giving rides. We hope that everyone has a great day out!”

A Witham man who campaigned for weapons awareness after his son was stabbed has died from a reported heart-attack.

Roads policing officers are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the B1125 (Dunwich Road) Blythburgh near to the junction with the B1387, which happened this morning, Tuesday 27 September.

Police were called at 8.56am today to reports of a single vehicle collision. Following the incident, a motorcyclist, a man in his fifties, has sadly died.
