Multiple 999 calls were made when a man appeared to be drowning off the coast of Jaywick.

Clacton Coastguard, Clacton Beach Patrol and Clacton RNLI inshore lifeboat were sent to the scene at about 4.20pm.

But before they arrived they were stood down as the man was found not to be in difficulty and was instead pretending to drown.

A Thames Coastguard spokeswoman warned swimmers not to waste the services’ essential time.
