A disgraced Suffolk dentist who cheated the NHS out of £78,000 by billing for 1,700 patients he did not treat, including some who were dead, has been struck off.

Edmund Jaques, who ran a business called Home Dental Care Ltd, was jailed last year after admitting fraud between June 16, 2009, and March 12, 2011, by dishonestly submitting multiple FP17 claim forms for payment of dental treatment in respect of patients neither seen or treated by him.

Jaques, of Kentford, travelled to care homes throughout Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire providing dental services for elderly residents who were unable to visit a surger

A public hearing by the General Dental Council (GDC), which he did not attend, was told of the allegations and he was struck off.

A statement from the GDC’s Professional Conduct Committee said: “The Committee takes a serious view of Mr Jaques’ conviction of fraud. The aggravating factors in this case, include the fact that he carried out the fraudulent activity over a protracted period of time in his capacity as a dentist and it involved large sums of public money for payment of dental treatment in respect of patients he did not treat.

“Furthermore, the Committee has not been presented with any mitigating circumstances of substance relating to his fraudulent conduct, nor has he accepted the seriousness of it.”

Jaques was jailed for 18 months in March last year after admitting the offence.

Unless he exercises his right of appeal, his name will be struck off the register in approximately 28 days.
