Lakenheath: Developer must help fund new primary school

The first raft of more than 1,000 homes for a west Suffolk village have been recommended for approval –providing they help fund a new primary school.
The plans for 67 homes off Briscoe Way, Lakenheath, are the smallest of four applications on the table for the village, and the first to go before Forest Heath’s planning committee.
The officers’ report for the application – which will be debated tomorrow – recommends the application for approval pending a stringent S106 agreement with the developers, which includes more than £600,000 towards primary school places and public open spaces.
The report acknowledges that a new 315-place primary school – with build costs funded by developers – has been earmarked for the village to meet demand.
It says: “Whilst the preference would be to expand the existing primary school to provide additional classrooms with facilities, the site constraints mean that this is not a realistic or feasible option. With latent population growth and further housing growth planned at Lakenheath, the emerging education strategy is to deliver a new 315-place primary school.
“With further planned housing growth in Lakenheath over the plan period to 2031, the only sensible outcome will be to provide a second new 315-place primary school.”
In total, 1,057 new homes could be built in the village if all four existing applications were approved. Among these plans is an application from Elveden Farms for 750 homes, a primary school and health centre.
Other applications due to be decided on Wednesday include a new 16-home scheme in Kennett Park, which has been recommended for approval, and a new mobile home park in Beck Row, which is also recommended for approval.
