Leiston: Parade follows in footsteps of town’s First World War troops

12:18 20 July 2014

Leiston World War One commemoration day.

Leiston World War One commemoration day.

Veterans followed in the footsteps of fallen colleagues as they marched through a Suffolk town to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The parade in Leiston partially followed the route of the town’s H company of the 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, on their way to Leiston station to set off for wartime service on August 5, 1914, the day after war was declared.

The parade passed through Old Post Office Square, pausing at the Old Railway Station, before continuing to the Alde Valley Sixth Form Centre Field for a Drumhead Ecumenical Service of commemoration.

The afternoon featured an open-air band concert of music of the First World War period community stalls, and children’s activities.

A new Leiston in the Great War exhibition was also officially opened at the Long Shop Museum.
