A road worker killed on a west Suffolk road died from injuries consistent with impact, a postmortem has found.

Aidan Gallagher died after the accident in Lidgate, near Newmarket, on Tuesday last week, close to roadworks he was working on along the B1063.

A Home Office postmortem examination on Tuesday found Mr Gallagher - originally from Sligo in Ireland - died from internal injuries consistent with impact.

There were conflicting reports about whether the 34-year-old had collapsed or been hit by a car, while an initial postmortem came back as inconclusive.

Mr Gallagher was one of six children and a talented Gaelic footballer, his family said in a tribute.

Police were called to the scene by the ambulance service at 10.30am, and are now appealing for witnesses to any collision.

A spokesman from Suffolk Constabulary said: “Officers are asking for anyone who was driving along the road at the time and may have witnessed the collision, or who saw any vehicle with damage that may have been caused by a collision to get in contact.

“Officers are also appealing to anyone who was driving a vehicle that was in collision on the B1063 road at Lidgate at this time to make contact with police.”

Anyone with information should contact the constabulary’s major investigations unit on 101.
