Police are appealing for witnesses after a single-vehicle collision in north Essex left a woman fighting for her life in hospital.

The incident happened in Little Horkesley when the driver of a silver BMW 325 convertible appeared to lose control of the vehicle while driving along Vinesse Road at about 5pm yesterday.

The car hit a tree stump and ended up in a ditch.

The passenger in the car, a 34-year-old woman from the Colchester area, was taken to Colchester General Hospital with serious head injuries. She is in a critical and life-threatening condition.

The driver, a 39-year-old man, also from the Colchester area, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was later arrested on suspicion of driving dangerously – he is currently being questioned.

A section of the road was closed while an investigation into the incident took place.

Anyone who saw the vehicle, which had its top down, before the incident or anyone who saw the collision is asked to call Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01245 240590.
