Long Melford: Thousands enjoy fireworks

Flash bang wallop: All the fun of the funfair, fireworks and bonfire

Flash bang wallop: All the fun of the funfair, fireworks and bonfire

MORE than £12,000 worth of fireworks went up in smoke in just 20 minutes at one of Suffolk’s biggest bonfire night celebrations last night.

Organisers of the Big Night out, held in the grounds of Long Melford Hall, were celebrating “perfect conditions” for the event after escaping the rain that had earlier threatened to throw a dampener on the proceedings.

Last night’s firework extravaganza was the 42nd Big Night Out and organisers say it went off without any hitches. There were no reported problems with traffic and although numbers were a little down on previous years, an estimated 6,000 people trekked through the mud to watch the explosive firework display set to music.

Big Night Out Administrator Andrew Hagger said the bonfire, topped with 10 guys designed and made by students from Long Melford Primary School as part of an annual competition, was lit at 7.30pm. The firework show was brought forward to 8pm – the earlier time making it easier for younger members of the crowd to enjoy the pyrotechnic display.

A fun fair and refreshments enabled bonfire night revellers to carry on partying until well after 10pm.

The East Anglian Daily Times sponsors the event and volunteer group Project Seven handles the fundraising.
