Around 200 new trees have been planted by volunteers as part of an ongoing project to transform a former green space into a country park.

Long Melford Open Spaces (LMOS) took on the management of the former Rodbridge picnic site in May 2012 on behalf of the parish council.

Via a series of working parties and a lot of hard work, the group has tidied up, replanted and transformed the area to create a haven for wildlife and a park for visitors to enjoy. This week, they took delivery of six species of tree including hazel, crab apple, holly and hawthorn, donated by the Woodland Trust.

LMOS chairman Reg McKenna said the trees had been planted in three different areas. He added: “These are places where we have had to clear up old trees.

“We are also using the bark chippings to improve the park’s pathways.”

Around 60 volunteers help out at the park.
