A woman has been banned from the roads after being found guilty of causing the death of a partially-sighted man by careless driving.

Samantha Pitcher, 28, was accused of not concentrating on the road ahead of her and failing to see David Wright, 74, and his wife Pauline as they crossed Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft, in February last year.

Today Pitcher, of Maidstone Road, Lowestoft, was handed an 18 month community order, which included 240 hours on unpaid work, and banned from the roads for two years.

Mr and Mrs Wright were walking back from the Foxburrow pub after a meal with their son and grandchildren at the Foxburrow pub.

Ipswich Crown Court was previously told Mr Wright was walking with a white reflective stick and holding his wife’s arm when the collision with the car driven by Pitcher happened. The couple’s son, Howard, heard a screech of tyres and a “massive crack” – he turned to see his mother lying on the kerb and his father under the car.

Mr Wright, of Gainsborough Drive, Gunton, died from his injuries and his wife now has to use a walking frame.
