Lowestoft: Fire crews battle flames in flat

Firefighters tackled a blaze which broke out in a flat in Suffolk last night.

Three fire engines were called to reports of a small kitchen fire at a property in Esplanade, Lowestoft, at around 9.10pm.

Crews arrived on scene to find several people were still inside the flat, a Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.

The blaze was extinguished by and under control by 9.30pm.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation, the spokesman added.

It is not known how many people were inside the flat or how the fire started.

Police were initially called but were told by firefighters they were not needed before they had arrived on the scene, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
