Andrew Reilly tried to squeeze through a small broken kitchen window of a property in Howard Street, Lowestoft, but got his head stuck and then became even more wedged when he put his arms through the window to try to free himself, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Reilly’s barrister Steven Dyble told the court there was an element of farce about the way his client had gone about committing the burglary and had found himself trapped in the window.

“It wasn’t because of his size – he is quite a thin man – it was more to do with the size of the window,” Mr Dyble said.

Reilly, of Milton Road East, Lowestoft, admitted attempted burglary and in addition to being jailed for 12 months he was made the subject of a two-year restraining order banning him from contacting the victim of the burglary.

Michael Crimp, prosecuting, told the court that Reilly had known the owner of the property in Howard Street, Lowestoft, for about six months and had gone to see him on December 10 last year.

While he was there he learned the householder was going out and had asked how long for.

When the householder returned home at lunchtime, he discovered Reilly trying to climb through his kitchen window.

Mr Dyble said his client had been in custody for nine weeks and needed help to address his drug abuse.
