Police search teams scour woodland around Parklands in Ufford on Tuesday, 4 March where human bone was found.

Residents in Ufford have spoke about the discovery of a human bone in their village.

A piece of bone was discovered in an area of woodland just off Parklands on February 21 by police as part of an inquiry into the disappearance of Luke Durbin.

The bone has been confirmed as human, but police must wait for forensic analysis to confirm the age and sex of the person it belongs to.

The area, between the B1438 at The Avenue/Parklands, has been taped off by police as forensic investigations continue.

Those who live in Parklands spoke about their experiences of the area and the woodland.

Elizabeth Smith, who has lived on the estate for 56 years said: “I walk through it. It’s a lovely woodland.

“People walk their dogs through there.

“Kids enjoy it in the summer, I can’t believe it.

The last time Mrs Smith, 84, saw a police presence like this in the area was when police were searching the area when they found the bone.

She added: “I thought it was a training session.

“People do put rubbish over there.”

Jasmine Gooch, who has lived in Parklands for three years, said: “I find it quiet. I’m scared.

“I walk in there with my son as it’s a shortcut to the park.”

Mr Humphrey, another resident, who has lived on the estate since 1961, said: “There’s been nothing like this before.

“It might be a storm in a tea cup. People used to bury old junk in there.

“It might be something medieval.”

Lesley Barter, who has lived in her home for 16 years, said: “It puts an air of darkness over the woods.

“The woods had been one of the nice things about living here. When my daughter was younger they used to play in the woods.

“I used to walk through the woods to get to the village shop.”

Paul McGilloway, who has been on the estate for nearly eight years, said: “I take the dogs over there. It’s lovely and quiet.

“You see people walking their dogs and you say hello to them.”

Anyone with information into the disappearance of Luke should call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
