The emergency services were called out to the A414 at Maldon on Tuesday night following reports that a person had jumped off a road bridge at the River Chelmer.

The South Woodham Coastguard Rescue Team, West Mersea RNLI Inshore Lifeboat team, Essex Fire Service, police and the police helicopter were all called to the scene at about 6.30pm.

A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said that footprints were found in the area, which indicated the person had left the scene without help.
