A man remains in a critical but stable condition following a collision between a car and a train at a level crossing in Melton yesterday.
British Transport Police (BTP) and the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) were called to the Bloss level crossing, on Deben Way, shortly after 10.30am yesterday.
The silver Jaguar estate was struck side-on by the train on the driver’s side.
The driver of the vehicle, who is believed to be from Bury St Edmunds, was seriously injured in the crash and flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by the air ambulance.
There were no other reported injuries on board the train, according to the BTP.
Today. a spokesman for the British Transport Police said the driver remained in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A spokesman for EEAST said: “We were called at 10.27am to an incident in Melton.
“An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended and treated a man with serious injuries.
“He was flown to Addenbrooke’s for further care.”
Jordan Wallace, a spokesman for Suffolk County Council, added: “By the time the fire service got there someone had already been rescued out of the car that was hit.”
A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue service said: “The casualty has been assisted from the car prior to fire service arrival and was left in the care of the ambulance.
“Crews on scene made the scene and vehicle safe.”
There were extensive delays on the lines around Melton as a result of the crash.
An investigation will now take place into how the collision occurred.
As a ‘private user’ crossing, those wanting to cross the tracks are advised to use a telephone box mounted next to the crossing to check whether there are any trains heading along the line.
A spokesman for Greater Anglia said the train had not derailed so was still drivable following the crash. It was moved to a depot in Norwich to be repaired.
A crane was used to remove the car from the tracks and the line was reopened just after 2pm.
