The crash happened near the turnoff for Margaretting just before 11.30pm yesterday when a car left the road’s northbound carriageway and hit a tree.

A man in his 20s from North London was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other men were taken to hospital after the incident. The second man was taken to Broomfield Hospital but then transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The third man suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to the Royal London Hospital.

The A12 was closed northbound between Ingatestone and Margaretting until 5.45am today for investigation work and recovery of the car.
