The total includes £880 for a 1924 final tie programme when Newcastle beat Aston Villa in front of 92,000 at Wembley.

Collectors came from all over the country to bid at Sunday’s auction in the new Lockdales premises.

There was even a bidder from Holland.

James Sadler, the auction manager of Lockdales, said: “It was quite a collection, and the vast interest is reflected in the final tally.

“The final that year was linked to the Empire Exhibition at Crystal Palace.

“Because it was such a famed game, many fakes have appeared down the years.

“But this is a very rare original.”

He revealed that it was originally wrapped in a tissue cover.

Meanwhile, a large batch of lifeboat postcards including many Aldeburgh rescue boats fetched £1,600.
